Honoring The Past

Strengthening The Future

Who We Are

Several Ohio citizens met on April 11, 1889, in the office of Governor J.B. Foraker in the Ohio Capital in Columbus.  This preliminary meeting was the beginning of the Ohio Society Sons of the American Revolution (OHSSAR), which predated the National Society by nineteen days.

An organizational meeting was held two months later on June 4th, at the State House in Columbus, at which the organization of the Society took place. The first Society meeting occurred in Cincinnati 11 months later, on May 28th, 1890.

Today we have 23 chapters around Ohio and are close to 2,000 members strong.

Foraker was an Ohio native born in Highland County. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He fought for almost three years, attaining the rank of Captain. He served as Governor of Ohio from 1886 to 1890 and then as a U.S. Senator from Ohio from 1897 until 1909.

What We Do

The goal of the Ohio Society, SAR is to "support and encourage our republic and free enterprise system which it has created, and to take whatever action is possible within the framework of our Regulations to accomplish this end."

This is accomplished through many means including, veterans' support, honoring Public Servants for outstanding service, speakers programs, and Color Guard presence at patriotic events.

Patriotism

We are committed to fostering patriotism in our youth through a variety of programs that offer monetary and scholarship funds to winners of the associated contests.  These include children from third through 12th grade

This accomplished through oration, essay, scouting, and brochure programs.  Also by awarding Good Citizenship awards. And going into classrooms to help reinforce the importance of the Constitution.

Education

We are actively working to perpetuate the memory of Revolutionary War Patriots by inspiring the community with a reverence for the principles of government founded by our forefathers.

This is accomplished with programs like encouraging historical research of the American Revolution,

Preserving the records of Revolutionary War Patriots, and

Gravestone markings and restoration.

History

The Sons of the American Revolution is a 501(c)(3), non-political, nonsectarian, and non-secretive organization
